Safe Harbor

“The roar of the sea may be joyous to a rejoicing spirit, but to the son of sorrow the wide, wide ocean is even more forlorn than the wide, wide world. This is not our rest and the restless billows tell us so.” –C.H. Spurgeon

It has now been two years since the death of our baby girl. This time of year brings an upheaval of familiar emotions and thoughts. My mind goes back to that dreadful day like it was yesterday. The anticipation of welcoming a new life into this world is so very precious, and one that often brings many happy conversations of what is to come. What will her name be? What do you think she will be like? Will she enjoy music and reading like us? Death stole this sweet little gift from us and the sting was almost more than I could bear, but time marched on and left us to walk in the Valley of Death. Friends got pregnant and new lives were born while we sat in our grief, and those preparations of welcoming a baby became a bitter reminder Dabney’s absence. I was determined to come out the other side alive, but it was not without a limp of wrestling with pain and sadness. It is the grief and pain that helps me remember Dabney and honor her memory.
Now, two years later we are blessed with a little boy, and I cannot thank the Lord enough for Mac's safe arrival into our world. The Lord has given us hope through a small child, and we are able to go forward with a rejoicing spirit resting in the truth that our joy comes "from a land where there is no more sea...a place where the Lord hath spoken."
