Continental Drift

Friday was "date night." Living on a budget Matt and I don't get these very often. In fact, I cannot remember when our last "date night" was to tell you the truth. Nevertheless, I decided we were due a date night and made plans to eat at Apres Diem and then watch a movie at the Midtown Art Cinema- Matt's choice.
The food at Apres Diem was amazing and the atmosphere felt like we stepped across the pond to dine in a quaint European cafe. From the Salmon Ciabatta sandwich to the Salad Nicoise we both savored food and conversation as we listened to the rain fall around us outside the covered patio.
The movie Matt picked (no surprise) was Burn After Reading, the most recent Cohen Brother Film. Like most Cohen Brother films the words I would use to describe Burn After Reading are unusual, quirky, humerous and dark. It was also fast; only a hour and a-half.

In the middle of the meal my phone rang and I recognized the number was work. With a pit in my stomach and much reluctance I answered it only to be pleasantly surprised as a co-worker invited us to dine with her and her husband at a the 5 Seasons Brewery the next day (Saturday) for a late lunch- their treat!
In my profession I have the privilege of being surrounded by people who are not only conscientious of what they eat but also of how foods are prepared and where the food hails from. This being said 5 Seasons Brewery specializes in making dishes using foods from local farms (i.e. Burgers using grass fed beef from Riverview Farms, etc.) as well as brewing their own beer. When I get a chance to eat foods where most of the elements come from within a 500 mile radius of the final dish I enjoy the experience all the more. To make the evening more delicous was the list of beers on tap. What a delight to find a beer called a Flanders Golden Ale that contains "notes of banana, clove, bubblegum, coriander and passion fruit in the nose and palate with a spicy finishing warmth," and to actually taste these unusual flavors with each sip...this made our dining experiences this weekend memorable and delicious.
